1 | Practice Rigorous Authenticity
My mask is:
I avoid difficult conversations2 | Surrender The Outcome
I can’t control:
I can not control what my clinical preceptor (or any superior) thinks of me.
I can control:
- I can control if I set boundaries based on priorities.
- I can communicate that I need guidance.
- I can speak up if I disagree with something.
- I can control if I take time to prepare properly without preparing out of fear or insecurity.
3 | Do Uncomfortable Work
My Daily Reflection:
Did I avoid a hard conversation today?
My Mask-Free Action(s):
Big action:
- I am going to print a physical copy of this card and share it with my preceptor and ask her to debrief this with me weekly.
Repeated action:
- For the next 4 Thursdays, I will communicate with my preceptor:
- Something that I felt I did well.
- Something I think that I need to improve on within my position.
- Something I think they did well.
- Something I think they could improve to make the internship experience stronger.
Why this matters to me:
(revised with new card) I want to be transparent in my weaknesses and my strengths with the people I report to. Then, I can honestly tell my wife and children that I am living fully authentic!! No hidden masks creeping back on.
